My husband’s Grandmother made a wonderful ham every year for the holidays. That was her responsiblity and no one argued; no one really argued with her in general. She gave me her recipe and sketched out exactly how arrange the green and red cherries. She also informed me that you can only find the green cherries during the holidays and I needed to get the early and get enough for both the Thanksgiving ham and the Christmas ham.

I didn’t think much of our conversation at the time, but she passed away just weeks afterward. Of course, I’m so thankful she shared her time and recipe with me. As I get older, I realize how important family is and how important traditions are. I want to give my boys special memories of holidays and being together as a family.

I’m sharing my version of her Brown Sugar Ham recipe. I didn’t want to make a whole 7 pound ham for just the four of us. I found a ham steak and used the same flavor, simply reducing them from the original recipe.

Holiday ham

The brown sugar bakes with pineapple juice creating slightly sweet glaze. This is one of those encore recipes where one thing leads to another. You can serve the ham plain with vegetables, make sandwiches, make omelets, fritatta and quiche. The possibilities are really endless and the brown sugar glaze will flavor and make all the dishes better.

Remember to remove the cloves before serving.

So easy to fix, and so yummy! I cooked it on top of the stove, since I already had veggies in the oven. I also used “individual” ham steaks, with a pineapple slice on top, and a cherry in the middle of each. It made for a very attractive presentation, and tasted delicious! Oh, and I stuck it under the broiler for a couple of minutes, to caramelize pineapple a bit.

    1. It’s not little. It’s 1.5 to 2 pounds – which be a 8 ounce serving at 2 pounds or a 6 ounce serving at 1.5 pounds

  2. I just bought a ham steak. This sounds great, I’m making it tomorrow for dinner.
