Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Grease an 8x8 baking dish.
In a medium mixing bowl, mix together 1 and 1/2 cups flour (reserve the 1 and 1/2 tablespoons for later), baking powder, salt, and almonds. Set aside.
With an electric mixer, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add egg and lemon zest and beat well. Gradually add the dry mixture, beating on low, until the dough is crumbly. Don’t overmix.
Set aside 1 cup of dough. Press the remaining dough evenly into the bottom of the baking dish. Spread jam on the dough. Add the remaining 1 and 1/2 tablespoons of flour to the dough you set aside. Sprinkle evenly over the jam layer.
Bake for 25-30 minutes, until lightly browned. Cool completely before cutting.
