Get all of your ingredients, utensils, pan (plus lid), and plate out before you start.
Crack the egg into a small bowl. Turn the stove on to medium-low. If it's too hot it will burn the butter or cook the toast before the egg is cooked. Be patient with this process.
Butter one side of each slice of bread. Cut a hole out of one slice of bread. Keep the hole and toast it too.
Place each slice of bread buttered side down in the skillet. You want to hear a 'light' sizzle. While the bread is browning, butter the top side of the bread. Allow it to toast until lightly brown. If you can remember to watch the clock for how long it takes to brown, it'll help when you cook the other side and the egg.
Remove the slice of bread with the hole in it momentarily.
Turn the slice of bread that's still in the pan (as well as the hole) and quickly put cheese on it.
Return the slice of bread with the hole to the pan, press it down so that the egg doesn't seep under it and slide the egg out of the bowl and into the hole. Keep holding the bread for a couple of seconds for the egg to set.
Place the lid on the pan and allow it to cook until the bread is toasted and the egg is cooked to your likely. This is the tricky part. This is where it's helpful if you watched the clock for the first side cooking. You may have to lift the lid to check it for doneness and that's okay.
Remove your sandwich from the pan and season with salt and pepper.
