Butter Roll
- 2 cups self-rising flour
- 1/2 cup shortening
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1/2 cup butter softened
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
Milk Sauce
- 2 cups milk
- 2/3 cup sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°. Cut shortening into flour with a fork. Sir in milk. On a floured surface, dump out dough and press together with hands to form a ball. Roll into a rectangle (about 8x10). Spread softened butter over dough, sprinkle 1/4 c sugar and cinnamon over top. Roll up and press together lightly. Slice and place in an 8x8-inch baking dish.
- In a saucepan, combine all sauce ingredients and heat over medium heat, stirring constantly, until bubbles just begin to form. Pour milk sauce over rolls. Bake 30 to 40 minutes or until lightly brown. Allow to sit and cool slightly. Great with vanilla ice cream.

Can you add strawberry 🍓 inside the butter roll
Yes
If you add strawberries it is not a butter roll. This desert do not require changes. You are not making butter roll you are making a strawberry roll.
Paula,
I have looked all over and can’t find the ingredients nor the instructions
My mother made the tastiest butter roll. For many years I’ve tried to come up with a butter roll that compares to hers, but no luck. I am elated! that I’ve come across your recipe. The one thing that my mother did with her roll was to just leave it rolled, and then cook. She would cut servings from the roll.
Oh, I like the idea of leaving it in a roll. I’ll try that.
Right exactly my mom left the rolls uncut as well, and the consistency seem to be more custard/buttery rather than cake like. I’ll try this style.
My grandmother used canned sweet milk instead of this sauce.
Am I missing something?? I can’t seem to find the sauce recipe?? Looks so good i wanted to try it! 🙂
The milk sauce ingredients are listed in the gray recipe box above under ‘Milk Sauce’ – the last 3 ingredients and the instructions are in #2 in the ‘Instructions’.
Sorry I still don’t find the recipe for the Milk Sauce, can someone help???
It’s the last 3 ingredients and the second set of instructions
This looks like something I have been searching for since I was 15, spent a year with my aunt in Sikeston, Mo. It was my favorite and I have never seen a recipe for an old fashioned butter roll! You may have just made me the happiest guy in the world! I have to try it, but it sure sounds the same. Ironically, I found by accident while scrolling and checking out the pecan cobbler and monkeybread. I am going to like your blog and I will let you know. Thank you so much. God bless!
