Butter Roll
- 2 cups self-rising flour
- 1/2 cup shortening
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1/2 cup butter softened
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
Milk Sauce
- 2 cups milk
- 2/3 cup sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°. Cut shortening into flour with a fork. Sir in milk. On a floured surface, dump out dough and press together with hands to form a ball. Roll into a rectangle (about 8x10). Spread softened butter over dough, sprinkle 1/4 c sugar and cinnamon over top. Roll up and press together lightly. Slice and place in an 8x8-inch baking dish.
- In a saucepan, combine all sauce ingredients and heat over medium heat, stirring constantly, until bubbles just begin to form. Pour milk sauce over rolls. Bake 30 to 40 minutes or until lightly brown. Allow to sit and cool slightly. Great with vanilla ice cream.

I remember this recipe very well. My grandma use to make this for us all the time along with, her mom’s tea cakes, cookies, pies, fried hand pies, all sorts of cakes, biscuits, pie dough cookies, all sorts of southern desserts and classics. Living in the south we actually always got the best of the best and I miss my grandmothers so much, happy I did get so many of my favorite recipes they made for me, thank you for bringing this recipe back into my life, I have to retrieve my grandmothers recipe and try this almost long list favorite
I have the same memories of my grandmother’s cooking. Thank you for your sweet comment.
