Burger Hobo Dinner Foil Pack recipe, whether you are camping or simply cooking a dinner at home your prep-ahead meal is all conveniently in one pack with little to no cleanup.

In Boy Scouts, my boys made Hamburger Hobo Pack Dinners at almost every campout. But…. they are great for cooking at home too!

BURGER HOBO DINNER FOIL PACK

There are so many reasons to make Foil Pack dinners.

  • Kids love them.
  • They are easily customized.
  • Easy clean-up.
  • They make great prep-ahead meals.

The key to a successful Hobo Pack is choosing foods and cutting them into sizes that everything will cook at the same rate. This was you don’t have overcooked with undercooked items. This takes a little planning but isn’t difficult.

WHAT IS A HOBO PACK?

If you camp, you’re probably well aware of ‘hobo pack’ or ‘foil pack’ dinners. A Hobo Pack is a meal where everything is placed in aluminum foil packages and cooked at once. They are also known as Foil Packs. And, you don’t have to be camping to enjoy them. Hobo Packs are great to throw on the grill or even in the oven. The beautiful thing about it is they’re nothing to clean afterward. You throw the whole, hopefully, empty pack away.

WHAT MEAT AND VEGETABLES CAN I COOK IN HOBO PACKS?

Seafood, chicken, beef, and sausage made from any of those meats, as well as vegetables, cook great in foil packs. So, almost anything can be put into foil pack meals. However, you need to put thought into items that cook at the same rate.

CAN I COOK BURGER HOBO DINNER FOIL PACK IN AN AIR FRYER?

Yes. Place them steam side up and cook for 20 to 25 minutes.

CAN I COOK BURGER HOBO DINNER FOIL PACK ON THE STOVETOP?

Yes. Place the foil packs on a griddle or pan and cook on medium-high heat.

TIPS FOR BURGER HOBO DINNER FOIL PACK SUCCESS

  1. Use heavy-duty aluminum foil.
  2. Use plenty of foil. I like to double it.
  3. Cut the veggies into the same-sized pieces. As well,  don’t pair long-cooking potatoes together with quick-cooking shrimp.
  4. You need to create steam to help cook the ingredients in your packet. I suggest using one vegetable that has a high water content in each pack like zucchini or tomatoes. If you place grains in the pack, you’ll want to add water or broth.
  5. Be aware of the steam when you start to open them. You may want to use oven mitts, grilling gloves, or tongs to open.

Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cook Time: 45 minutes
Servings: 6 servings

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds lean ground beef
  • 1 packet dried onion soup mix like this
  • 1.5 pounds baby Yukon gold potatoes quartered
  • 12 ounces carrots frozen, crinkle-cut
  • 1 medium red onion cut into 1-inch chunks
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon garlic minced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika or regular paprika
  • 6 slices Colby jack cheese or your favorite cheese

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  • Place the ground beef with the onion soup mix into a large bowl, mix to combine. Separate into 6 equal-sized portions. Shape into patties and set aside.
  • Place the cut potatoes, carrots, onion, olive oil, garlic powder, salt, pepper, and paprika into a large bowl, stir to combine so the veggies are coated.
  • Lay a 12x18 piece of heavy-duty foil on the counter. Spray with cooking spray.
  • Place ⅙ of the veggies in the middle of the foil. Add a hamburger patty on top.  Close the foil around the ingredients to form a little pouch.
  • Place on sheet trays, bake for 45 minutes or until the veggies are tender and the burger patties reach at least 160°F.
  • Open the foil packs and place a slice of cheese on top of the burger patty.
  • Loosely cover with foil again for about 5 minutes until the cheese is melted, serve.
