This DIY Halloween cookie kit includes sugar cookies, orange ready-made frosting, candy corn, Halloween sprinkles, Halloween candy, and a plastic knife. Package everything for a Halloween party, classroom activity, or family movie night. Make homemade sugar cookies, use slice-and-bake dough, or prepare a sugar cookie mix to fit your schedule.

Clear plastic container holding two sugar cookies, two containers of orange frosting, Halloween sprinkles, pumpkin candies, and candy corn.

The decorating is the fun part. A round cookie can become a silly face, a sprinkle-covered pumpkin, or a candy corn creation. This version needs no piping bags or cookie cutters.

  • Choose homemade cookies or a convenient dough or mix.
  • Portion the supplies ahead of time.
  • Give each person a kit to decorate at the table or take home.
  • Customize the candy and sprinkles.
  • Spread the frosting with a plastic knife—no special decorating tools required.

Start with these six supplies. Small food-safe bags and containers keep everything separate until decorating time.

These portions are a starting point. Larger cookies or thicker frosting layers will need more frosting. Keep a little extra available for refills.

Homemade sugar cookies

Use my Old Fashioned Chewy Sugar Cookies (Tea Cakes) for the homemade option. These are scoop-and-flatten cookies, so you don’t have to roll out dough or use Halloween cookie cutters. Their round shape gives everyone a simple base to decorate.

Follow the linked recipe, then let the cookies cool completely before packing.

Slice-and-bake sugar cookies

Refrigerated slice-and-bake sugar cookie dough is a convenient shortcut. Prepare and bake it according to the package directions. Keep the cookies similar in size so each kit has about the same amount to decorate.

Sugar cookies from a mix

A sugar cookie mix works, too. Add the ingredients listed on the package and follow its baking directions. If the package offers a drop-cookie method, use that for easy round cookies.

Whichever option you choose, include baked cookies in the kit so the recipient can start decorating right away.

  1. Prepare the cookies. Make homemade sugar cookies, bake slice-and-bake dough, or prepare cookies from a mix.
  2. Cool completely. Let the cookies cool before bagging them.
  3. Portion the frosting. Spoon orange ready-made frosting into small food-safe containers with secure lids.
  4. Separate the toppings. Divide the candy corn, Halloween sprinkles, and Halloween candy into individual bags or containers.
  5. Pack each kit. Place two cookies, the frosting, the three toppings, and one plastic knife in a small box or bag. Arrange the contents so the cookies won’t be crushed.
  6. Add a decorating note. Include these simple instructions: “Spread frosting on your cookies. Add sprinkles and candy. Enjoy!”

Candy corn faces: Spread orange frosting over a cookie. Arrange candy corn and small Halloween candies into a funny face.

Sprinkle pumpkins: Cover a round cookie with orange frosting. Add sprinkles around the edge and a small candy at the top for a stem.

Candy patterns: Make stripes, circles, or a border with candy corn and Halloween candy. This works well for anyone who would rather make a pattern than a face.

Sprinkle-covered cookies: Spread a thin layer of frosting, then add a light sprinkle coating. Simple decorations still look festive.

Press the toppings gently into the frosting so they stay in place. Everyone’s cookies can look different—that’s part of the fun.

Keep the cookies, frosting, and toppings separate until decorating time. Frosted cookies can smear when packed in bags.

Choose a container with enough room for the supplies, and avoid placing heavy frosting cups on top of the cookies. A shallow box makes everything easy to see. If you use gift bags, carry them in a box to protect the cookies during transport.

For a party, set out paper plates or parchment sheets as decorating spaces. Give each person their own plastic knife and frosting portion.

When making kits for a group, check ingredient labels and classroom food policies. Keep the original packaging available so parents can review ingredients. The FDA explains how food labels help people identify allergens. FDA

Check the cookie yield on your chosen recipe or dough package before shopping. Frosting packages are often labeled by weight, so use the package information to determine how many containers to purchase.

For an easy schedule, bake the cookies the day before decorating. Once completely cool, store them in an airtight container. Assemble the kits close to the activity for the freshest cookies.

Follow the ready-made frosting label for storage after opening, including any refrigeration instructions. Transferring frosting to a small cup does not change its storage requirements.

Keep kits away from heat and direct sunlight. Store decorated cookies in a single layer in a covered container, following the frosting’s storage directions. Don’t assume soft ready-made frosting will become firm enough for stacking.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use store-bought cookies?

Yes. Plain, unfrosted sugar cookies make this a no-bake assembly project. Choose cookies with enough surface area for frosting and toppings.

Do I need Halloween-shaped cookies?

No. Round sugar cookies work well. Orange frosting, candy corn, and Halloween sprinkles give them a festive look without special cookie cutters.

Can I use ready-made frosting instead of royal icing?

Yes. This kit uses orange ready-made frosting. Choose a spreadable variety of frosting that works with a plastic knife.
Royal icing is an alternative for cookies that need a hard finish, but it isn’t necessary for this decorating activity.

Can these be Halloween party favors?

Yes. Package the undecorated cookies and supplies separately. Add a decorating note and any storage instructions from the frosting label. Small boxes help protect the cookies on the trip home.

How many cookies should I put in each kit?

Three or four medium cookies (about 4 inches) is a practical starting point. Increase the frosting and toppings if you include more cookies or use larger ones.
