If you’re like me, I don’t want hot food during hot weather. First, I don’t want to heat the appliances that in turn heat the house up. But, I also just want foods that are cool and refreshing. For instance, take this smoothie bowl, it’s good, it’s good for you, and it takes just a couple of minutes to make. Additionally, this smoothie will keep you full all morning while nourishing your body.

Now that I’m into smoothie bowls, I buy bananas in bulk when they’re on sale and freeze them. Read my tips on How to Freeze Bananas for Smoothies here.

What is acai?

Acai (pronounced ah-sigh-ee) is a deep purple berry. It comes from the acai palm tree, which is native to Central and South America. Studies show that acai is loaded with antioxidants, is suggested to improve cholesterol levels, has shown to have an anti-cancer effect, and has been linked with boosted brain function. Acai berries also have a pretty unique nutritional profile for a fruit. They are low in sugar and higher in healthy fats.

How to Make an Acai Smoothie Bowl

Acai bowls are as easy as blending a few ingredients together and adding your favorite toppings.

  1. First, you need frozen bananas. Bananas are the base for all my smoothie bowls. They add a creaminess that gives the mixture a texture much like ice cream.
  2. You need Acai powder. The powder has an earthy flavor. ‘Kind of’ like blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries that have been mixed with unsweetened cocoa powder.
  3. As well, I used 1/2 cup unsweetened, plain almond milk. You can use coconut water or just water.
  4. I have this Nutribullet, but you can use a high-powered blender. All you do is add the bananas, acai powder, and almond milk to the Nutribullet and blend until smooth. Pour into a bowl and top with as much or as little toppings that you want.
  5. Toppings suggestions. Try almonds, granola, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, coconut, hemp seeds, chia seeds, flax seeds, honey, or agave.
