Tips and Tricks for a Green Lawn Part 4. Green (hopefully). Cool. Comfortable. Your lawn makes up the majority of your outdoor space and can host a variety of activities from picnics, cookouts, yard sales, and lawn games. With all that traffic it can begin to look ragged of you don’t properly fertilizer and water. Now is a perfect time to begin a feeding and watering schedule.

GREEN LAWN TIPS

Other things you can do to help keep your lawn in top shape are:

  1. Test the soil. Testing the soil is the only way to identify what your lawn needs. You can find an inexpensive Soil Test Kit at Home Depot.
  2. Rack any leaves left from the fall.
  3. Mow the lawn to about 2 inches tall. This will remove brown, dead grass and encourage new growth.
  4. Dethatch lawn. This opens up the lawn so that nutrients and water can reach the roots. Myth – grass clippings don’t cause thatch
  5. If you use a preemergent for weed control, aerating now, removing 3 to 4-inch plugs of soil, loosens the soil so that oxygen and fertilizer can get to the roots. Myth – spiked shoes will not aerate a lawn
  6. Fertilize

These Orbit products are often found only online, however, my Home Depot had them in-store.

I love this blue! The hand sprayer has adjustable settings to control water flow.

Since our lawn is so large, I wanted to look at the entire selection of shower wands and hand sprayers.
Furthermore, this one has a very comfortable grip if you have a lot of grass to water.

It also has an on/off switch on the handle so you don’t have to walk back to the faucet to turn the water off.

This attaches right to the end of your water hose.
I love that it is rubber around the spray end.
Why is that important?
Because when you drop it on concrete or the deck it doesn’t harm the concrete or the sprayer
(and it doesn’t make that loud clunk sound!)

Furthermore, the salesperson in the garden department recommended this pocket hose.

It contracts easily and takes up very little space.

But, this is my favorite gadget. You see we only have one faucet at the back of the house and a very big lawn.
This is perfect for when you need multiple hose at once.

shedThe boys wanted a ‘house’ of their own! ‘Look, Mommie, we can put bunk beds in here!’
Now that might be nice, but I’d rather have it for storage for myself!
