What Is a Dump Cobbler?

A dump cobbler is exactly what it sounds like. Instead of carefully layering ingredients, you simply add everything to the baking dish in a specific order and let the oven do the work.

As it bakes, the batter rises while the sugar and hot water create a rich chocolate sauce underneath. The result is part cobbler, part pudding cake, and completely irresistible.

The crushed Oreo cookies add even more chocolate flavor and a fun cookies-and-cream twist.

3 Step Oreo Cookie Dump Cobbler

This recipe is totally the result of a suggestion from my youngest son, Ryder. He requested, ‘Oreos baked into a cake’. As a result, I developed this decadent cobbler!

Ingredients

  • Butter
  • Oreo cookies
  • Self-rising flour
  • Whole milk
  • Granulated sugar
  • Pure vanilla extract
  • Brown sugar
  • Hot water

Self-Rising Flour

Self-rising flour already contains baking powder and salt. If you only have all-purpose flour, make your own by combining:

  • 1½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2¼ teaspoons baking powder
  • ¾ teaspoon salt

Whole Milk

Whole milk gives the batter the richest flavor and best texture.

Oreo Cookies

Regular Oreos work best, but you can easily change the flavor with different Oreo varieties.

Try:

  • Golden Oreos
  • Mint Oreos
  • Peanut Butter Oreos
  • Birthday Cake Oreos
  • Double Stuf Oreos

If you’re looking for an easy dump dessert recipe, this one can be ready in 45 minutes. Consequently, thirty of those minutes are baking time. Therefore, it takes very little hands-on time.

  1. First of all, I like the results of using self-rising flour with this recipe. Therefore, I cannot guarantee the success of using all-purpose flour since this is not how I make it. The substitution to use all-purpose flour is: Combine 1 cup of allpurpose flour with 1 and 1/2 teaspoons of baking powder and 1/2 teaspoon of salt.
  2. Sift the flour before measuring. Most of all, learn how to properly measure flour. I wrote a detailed post, you can read it here.
  3. Also, you’ll need to measure the brown sugar ‘packed’. That means to fill your cup with brown sugar and firmly press it down. Add more sugar and press again until the cup is full.
  4. Finally, hot water is hot to the touch; it does not have to be boiling.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do you pour hot water over the batter?

The hot water combines with the sugar during baking to create the rich chocolate sauce underneath the cake layer.

Can I use all-purpose flour?

Yes. Add baking powder and salt as noted above to make your own self-rising flour substitute.

Can I make Oreo dump cobbler ahead?

Yes. Bake it earlier in the day and warm individual servings before serving.

Can I use different Oreo flavors?

Absolutely. Mint, Golden, Peanut Butter, Birthday Cake, and Double Stuf all work well.

  2. So bummed this didn’t turn out like I thought. The Oreos became almost gelatinous and there was no buttery caramel sauce. And I followed the recipe to a t!
