Chocolate Gravy is a Southern classic for breakfast, brunch, or dessert. It’s a rich and buttery chocolate sauce that’s best served warm over hot biscuits!
If you haven’t had chocolate gravy before, you are in for a real treat. This is a sweet gravy that’s silky smooth, sweet, and rich. It tastes like Chocolate Pudding Pie. Have you ever eaten the filling for a chocolate pudding pie?
My husband loves it. He was brought up on this southern breakfast food that his grandmother made. We tweaked her chocolate gravy recipe.
My boys will perform circus tricks for this treat – seriously!! They like it best with warm buttermilk biscuits or chocolate biscuits. However, I prefer it in a bowl. By itself. No biscuit. Saving calories. Straight chocolate. (Hey, don’t judge – I ran 8 miles this a.m.)
Melt butter in a saucepan.
Add cocoa and stir.
Add flour and stir. Cook 2 minutes.
Add sugar and stir. Cook until sugar dissolves.
Add milk and whisk lumps out.
Bring to a boil. Boil a couple of minutes then simmer.
Add vanilla and stir.
Pour over hot buttermilk biscuits!
The mix makes a great gift. Get the details here> Chocolate Gravy Mix Gift.

I have never heard of this but would like to try it. I assume that “cocoa” means unsweetened, powdered cocoa. Is that correct?
Yes, it is.
This recipe is just like my Ma used to make. Delish! Biscuits with chocolate gravy are such a treat.
Thanks a lot for sharing this idea! So tasty and easy to make! Loved it and will surely make it again!

Growing up we would go visit my aunt and uncle. She would treat us with chocolate gravy and biscuits for breakfast. I had forgotten about it until your post. I can’t wait to introduce this to my kids!
I had always heard about it growing up but my family didn’t make it. My husband did and now it’s our Saturday breakfast every week. 🙂
DeeDee Bolander says
My mother in law use to make this….she had 5 hungry boys to feed!
I mix the dry ingredients together with a pinch of salt…then add enough
water, stirring to the right consistancey for gravy while cooking. Then I add
the butter and vanilla at the end…..no lumps.

Christina, I hope you like it. We usually have it every Saturday, but missed today so we'll be having it as well tomorrow! enjoy!

Paula, This looks delish! I never would have thought to make Chocolate Gravy but the other day I was browsing the blogs and found Chocolate biscuits so why not? Thanks so much for linking up to Creative Thursday this week. I can’t wait to see what you link up next week. Have a great weekend.
I found you at Michelle's Tasty Creations and thought I would leave you comment. My sister-in-law brags all the time about making chocolate gravy….I'm going to give your recipe a try and then rub it into my sister-in-law. “Ha, I made chocolate gravy!” I'm Angie, by the way, over at A'lil Country Sugar. http://www.alilcountrysugar.blogspot.com
