Chocolate Gravy is a Southern classic. It's a rich and buttery chocolate sauce that's best served warm over hot biscuits!

Chocolate Gravy

I thought this was the most unusual breakfast item ever when I first heard it!
What? Did you say chocolate gravy?!
Hmmmm……
Interesting…..
My husband loves it. He was brought up on this breakfast food that his grandmother made. We tweaked the recipe. My boys would perform circus tricks for it! Seriously!! They eat it with hot buttermilk biscuits. However, I prefer it in a bowl. By itself. No biscuit. Saving calories. Straight chocolate. (Hey, don’t judge – I ran 8 miles this a.m.)
If you haven’t had Chocolate Gravy before, you are in for a real treat. This is a sweet gravy that silky smooth, sweet, and rich. It tastes like Chocolate Pudding Pie. Have you ever eaten the filling for a chocolate pudding pie?

 Melt butter in a saucepan.

 Add cocoa and stir.

Add flour and stir. Cook 2 minutes.

Add sugar and stir. Cook until sugar dissolves.

Add milk and whisk lumps out.

Bring to a boil. Boil a couple of minutes then simmer.
Add vanilla and stir.
Pour over hot buttermilk biscuits!

The mix makes a great gift. Get the details here> Chocolate Gravy Mix Gift.

Sometimes my best intentions for cookie and candy tray gifts fall through and I resort to Mixes for gifts. Chocolate Gravy Mix Gift is always a welcomed treat and super easy to make.

I have never heard of this but would like to try it. I assume that “cocoa” means unsweetened, powdered cocoa. Is that correct?

Growing up we would go visit my aunt and uncle. She would treat us with chocolate gravy and biscuits for breakfast. I had forgotten about it until your post. I can’t wait to introduce this to my kids!

I had always heard about it growing up but my family didn’t make it. My husband did and now it’s our Saturday breakfast every week. 🙂

My mother in law use to make this….she had 5 hungry boys to feed!
I mix the dry ingredients together with a pinch of salt…then add enough
water, stirring to the right consistancey for gravy while cooking. Then I add
the butter and vanilla at the end…..no lumps.

I found you at Michelle's Tasty Creations and thought I would leave you comment. My sister-in-law brags all the time about making chocolate gravy….I'm going to give your recipe a try and then rub it into my sister-in-law. “Ha, I made chocolate gravy!” I'm Angie, by the way, over at A'lil Country Sugar. http://www.alilcountrysugar.blogspot.com
