Chocolate Gravy is a Southern classic for breakfast, brunch, or dessert. It’s a rich and buttery chocolate sauce that’s best served warm over hot biscuits!

Chocolate Gravy

If you haven’t had chocolate gravy before, you are in for a real treat. This is a sweet gravy that’s silky smooth, sweet, and rich. It tastes like Chocolate Pudding Pie. Have you ever eaten the filling for a chocolate pudding pie?

My husband loves it. He was brought up on this southern breakfast food that his grandmother made. We tweaked her chocolate gravy recipe.

My boys will perform circus tricks for this treat – seriously!! They like it best with warm buttermilk biscuits or chocolate biscuits. However, I prefer it in a bowl. By itself. No biscuit. Saving calories. Straight chocolate. (Hey, don’t judge – I ran 8 miles this a.m.)

  1. I have never heard of this but would like to try it. I assume that “cocoa” means unsweetened, powdered cocoa. Is that correct?

  2. Growing up we would go visit my aunt and uncle. She would treat us with chocolate gravy and biscuits for breakfast. I had forgotten about it until your post. I can’t wait to introduce this to my kids!

    1. I had always heard about it growing up but my family didn’t make it. My husband did and now it’s our Saturday breakfast every week. 🙂

  3. My mother in law use to make this….she had 5 hungry boys to feed!
I mix the dry ingredients together with a pinch of salt…then add enough
water, stirring to the right consistancey for gravy while cooking. Then I add
the butter and vanilla at the end…..no lumps.

  4. Christina, I hope you like it. We usually have it every Saturday, but missed today so we'll be having it as well tomorrow! enjoy!

  6. I grew up with this. My grandmother made it for us and my mother makes it as well. It's delish!
